Palisade 30°F Quilt

Overview

The Palisade is Katabatic Gear’s three-season workhorse. It is a 30°F down quilt with a sewn-in footbox, a down-filled collar and a cord-and-clip system that ties it to a sleeping pad. At 524 g it weighs roughly half what a conventional mummy bag of similar warmth does. The trade-off is a 30°F rating that sleepers who run cold will want to treat as a lower limit, not a comfort figure.

Performance

Weight and packability. The Palisade’s appeal starts on the scale. One Eastern Continental Trail thru-hiker who swapped in a 6-foot Palisade late in the hike reported it cut more than a pound from base weight. His previous REI Jule weighed about 38 oz, and his Palisade, in the 850-fill duck configuration, weighed 19.8 oz. Owners of the 900-fill goose version report weights around 18 oz with cords and straps included. That squares with the 524 g (about 18.5 oz) listed here. The 14 x 25 cm packed size is small enough to fit comfortably in the bottom of a 40-liter pack.

Warmth. Testers consistently remark on how much loft the quilt carries for a 30°F model. One reviewer called out the loft the first time the quilt was laid out. The cut explains some of it. The inner lining is sewn smaller than the outer shell, so the down has room to expand instead of being squeezed against the body. Single-side loft is listed at 2.25 inches. The overstuffed collar and footbox baffles go after the usual cold spots, which are the neck and the feet. Calibrate expectations to the rating, though. A self-described cold sleeper who has used the Palisade said it covers general three-season use, but that for fall or spring in the Adirondacks they would step up to Katabatic’s warmer Sawatch. Sleepers who run warm will find the 30°F figure realistic. Cold sleepers should pair it with a warm base layer or move up to the 15°F model for shoulder-season nights near freezing.

The pad attachment system. This is the Palisade’s signature feature and the main reason to choose it over a plain quilt. Cords and clips hold the edges to the pad, and the elastic binding at the bottom opening closes the gap where drafts normally enter. The result is a quilt that stays put on restless sleepers. For nights without a pad, such as a hammock or a bunk, removable webbing straps take over. Continuous baffles let the user shift down toward the chest on cold nights or away from the body when it warms up. The sewn-in, trapezoidal footbox gives the quilt a mummy-style seal on the lower half of the body, which is a draft-proofing advantage over fully open quilts. Thru-hikers who tried it on long trails said the footbox helped hold warmth in.

Fabric and moisture. The shell is Pertex Quantum ECO, a finely woven nylon made from recycled yarns that feels soft against the skin and sheds light moisture. ExpeDRY treatment on the 900-fill goose down gives added insurance against condensation and damp tents. It does not make the quilt waterproof. A pack liner and a dry stuff sack still belong in the kit. The shell is thin by design, so owners should keep it clear of thorns and rough ground-sheet edges.

Fit. The regular-width quilt has a 54-inch shoulder width and 46-inch hip width, which one reviewer likened to a 63-inch mummy bag. A 5-foot-6 hiker who chose the 6-foot length found it spacious. A 5-foot-9.5-inch tester who went with the 6-foot version said it fit perfectly. The quilt comes in several lengths, from 5’6” to 6’6”, and Wide versions add roughly 4 inches at the hips and in foot girth. Overfill is available for an added fee.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • 524 g for a 30°F down quilt, with a packed size of 14 x 25 cm
  • Pad attachment system that cuts drafts and keeps the quilt in place
  • Generous loft from the differential cut and 900-fill goose down
  • Sewn-in footbox and overstuffed collar address the usual cold spots
  • Water-resistant down and a recycled Pertex Quantum ECO shell
  • Internal stash pocket, spare cords and straps included

Cons

  • Premium pricing, with a list price around $379 and some retailers charging more
  • A 30°F rating that cold sleepers should treat as a limit, not a comfort figure
  • A thin shell needs careful handling around abrasion and snags
  • The cord-and-clip system takes a few nights to dial in

Who Should Buy This

The Palisade suits thru-hikers and weekend ultralighters who sleep on a pad and mostly camp between spring and early fall. It is a good fit for trails like the JMT or the Wonderland Trail, where nights hover around freezing at worst. Side sleepers and restless sleepers will appreciate that the quilt does not slide off in the night. Cold sleepers and anyone planning regular sub-freezing nights should skip it and look at Katabatic’s 15°F Sawatch or another warmer quilt. Hikers who want a fully enclosed hood and back should stick with a mummy bag.

Verdict

The Palisade is a refined, light and well-sorted three-season quilt, and its pad attachment system is among the best at keeping drafts out. It costs more than many alternatives and rewards hikers who understand the 30°F rating. For warm and average sleepers building a lightweight sleep system, it is a strong buy.
