Feathered Friends Flicker UL Review

The Feathered Friends Flicker UL is a 20°F goose-down hybrid that zips up like a hoodless bag or opens flat like a quilt. It is warm and well made, but heavy for a quilt.

Flicker UL Quilt Sleeping Bag

Overview

The Flicker UL is a hybrid of a hoodless mummy bag and a top quilt. It has a full-length center zip that runs through the footbox, so it can be sealed shut on a cold night or laid flat as a blanket on a warm one. It’s sewn in the USA with 950+ fill power RDS goose down, and it suits backpackers whose nights swing between 60°F and the mid-20s. That versatility costs weight and bulk that dedicated quilts don’t carry.

Performance

Versatility. The Flicker’s main selling point is how easily it changes modes. A thru-hiker who spent 35 nights on the Colorado Trail with it, writing for The Trek, used it as an open quilt in 60°F lows. The same hiker stayed comfortable in the mid-20s with it zipped and cinched as a bag. A two-drawcord draft collar seals the neck, and the footbox cinches closed when the zipper is run all the way down. Switchback Travel describes it as a hoodless sleeping bag with a full-length zipper, cut so a sleeper can fully enclose themselves. That enclosure is what separates it from most open-back quilts, which rely on straps and a sleeping pad to keep drafts out.

Warmth. Feathered Friends has a reputation for ratings that hold up. CleverHiker’s testers said they trusted the Flicker to keep them warm down to 20°F, which they called rare in the industry. The loft backs that up. Switchback Travel lists the 20°F model at 14.7 oz of 950-fill down, about 2 oz more than the brand’s own Tanager CFL mummy bag at the same rating (12.7 oz). Cold sleepers should still be realistic. One r/Ultralight user, who sleeps cold, reported that the 20°F Flicker over an X-Therm pad worked down to a little above freezing. Below that, they added a foam pad and an over-bag.

Weight and packability. At 714 g, the Flicker is light for a zip-up bag. Next to dedicated 20°F quilts, it gives up ground. Treeline Review’s testing names the 20°F Flicker its pick for a quilt that can zip up like a sleeping bag, and notes it’s heavier, bulkier and pricier than other options. CleverHiker made the same point, attributing the extra mass to the durable build, the full-length zipper and a rating the bag actually meets. The 7 x 13 in packed size is compact for a bag in this class, but a 20°F quilt without a zipper will pack smaller.

Shell and durability. The 10-denier Pertex Endurance UL shell is water-resistant and breathable. SectionHiker says it protects against condensation and splashback in tents, under tarps, or when sleeping under the stars. GearJunkie’s reviewer put five years of backpacking and camping trips on an earlier Flicker UL and reported that it held up remarkably well. In the same review, the 950+ fill goose down earned praise for its warmth-to-weight ratio and for how small it packs.

Fit. The cut is generous at the shoulders (62 in) and tapers to a 39 in foot circumference. CleverHiker’s testers, who used the wide and long version, rated its coverage excellent and noted that extra width helps keep drafts out when a quilt is open. Back sleepers and side sleepers can both run it as a quilt without feeling pinned. Large sleepers or restless ones should look at the Wide model (67 in shoulders, 55 in hips).

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Real 20°F performance from a brand known for honest ratings
  • Full-length zip lets one bag serve as both a closed mummy and an open quilt
  • 950+ fill power RDS goose down in a 10-denier Pertex Endurance UL shell
  • Draft collar and cinchable footbox give bag-like sealing
  • Built in the USA, and long-term users report strong durability

Cons

  • Heavier and bulkier than dedicated 20°F quilts
  • Price starts at $499
  • No hood, so a warm hat or insulated hood is needed on cold nights
  • Sleepers who run cold may need a warmer rating or extra layers near freezing

Who Should Buy This

The Flicker UL is for the hiker who wants one insulation system for a long trail with big temperature swings. That means three-season thru-hikers on routes like the Colorado Trail, as well as people who sleep hot on some nights and cold on others. It also suits hikers who dislike strap-on quilt systems and want a bag that closes. Gram-counters chasing a sub-20 oz 20°F quilt should look elsewhere, as should anyone who never wants a zipper. Winter campers need a bag rated well below this one.

Verdict

The Flicker UL is a well-built, honestly rated 20°F hybrid that does two jobs well enough to justify a bit of extra mass. It’s not the lightest option and it’s not cheap, but the versatility and long-term durability are real. Buy it if you want the bag and the quilt in one package.
