A military-grade synthetic sleeping bag with a -15°C comfort rating, G-LOFT insulation, and near-waterproof construction — built for durability over gram-counting.
Overview
The Carinthia Defence 4 is a military-spec, synthetic-fill mummy bag rated to a -15°C comfort temperature. Carinthia is an Austrian manufacturer that targets both military and civilian users, and the company has been producing cold-weather sleeping bags for nearly 70 years. The Defence 4 is widely regarded as Carinthia’s best all-around sleeping bag — so much so that the Finnish Army adopted this exact model as their M05 sleeping bag. It is emphatically not an ultralight option, but for anyone prioritizing cold-weather reliability, moisture resilience, and hard-use durability over pack weight, it’s one of the most field-proven bags available.

Warmth & Insulation System
The Defence 4’s warmth-to-weight story starts with G-LOFT, Carinthia’s proprietary hollow-fibre fill made in-house in Austria. G-LOFT is Carinthia’s proprietary hollow-fibre synthetic fill, and it’s highly compressible, moisture resistant, and quick to loft once unpacked. The construction goes beyond just the fill: the Defence 4 uses a double-layered G-LOFT fill, with two insulation layers offset so there are no shared quilt lines, and the outer shell is attached afterwards — creating an additional trapped-air layer with no stitch perforations piercing the shell. On top of that, the fill incorporates Thermoflect, a very thin aluminium material, which Carinthia claims raises heat-retaining capacity by around 11%.
Real-world feedback largely backs up the temperature ratings. One user camped in a Carinthia bivvy with the bag in -11°C conditions and stayed warm throughout the night. Another user paired it with the Carinthia Tropen inner bag and reported it working well at -26°C. That said, a few users note it can run warm in shoulder seasons — to avoid sweating heavily in it, the night temperature likely needs to be around 5°C or below. Keep that in mind: this bag has a narrow comfort window on the warm end.
Weatherproofing & Moisture Resistance
This is where the Defence 4 genuinely separates itself from most civilian sleeping bags. The outer Shellproof shell is made from lightweight, durable, ripstop-reinforced PU-coated polyamide, and is both windproof and waterproof to a degree — yet the bag is surprisingly breathable. Testers have had these bags get soaked on the outside with no noticeable drop in performance. The moisture-resistant G-LOFT fill provides the second layer of insurance — unlike down, synthetic fibre dries out inside much quicker than down if it gets moist or wet.
One practical note from field use: the near-airtight construction means that unless care is taken, trapped air can balloon the outer shell when packing. Fully unzipping and stuffing foot-box first helps air escape cleanly.
Zipper, Fit & Interior Space
The zipper system is genuinely well-engineered for its intended use. The center zip is covered with a wide, full-length baffle eliminating cold spots, and a two-way design lets you open the footbox for ventilation while the anti-snag top allows fast exit.
The fit is more generous than most mummy bags. Users with chests as large as 52 inches report still having enough room to roll and move comfortably. The trapezoidal footbox deserves a mention too: it’s sized so that feet don’t poke the insulation outward in a normal sleeping position — avoiding cold spots — and there’s enough room to store a shoe bag or extra clothing. The L size makes this even more useful; in very cold conditions, the extra length can make it practical to store boots inside a waterproof bag in the footbox to prevent them icing up overnight.
The face opening is a common sticking point for first-time buyers. It looks small from the outside, but once inside the bag, most users are surprised by how much room there is around the head area and how manageable the opening actually feels. That said, it does take a night or two to settle into.
The Modular System
The Defence 4 and the Carinthia Tropen liner are designed as a system — with zippers positioned to minimize heat loss when combined, and both bags pack into the Defence 4’s compression sack.
Together they form a four-season system and allow you to carry only the weight and bulk necessary for the temperature range you’re expecting.
If you’re building a year-round sleep system, this modularity is genuinely useful.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Exceptional real-world warmth for a synthetic bag in this weight class
- Near-waterproof outer shell with moisture-wicking inner lining
- Double-layer offset quilting with loose shell eliminates cold spots
- Fast-lofting G-LOFT fill with Thermoflect heat reflection
- Military-spec durability — built to absorb years of hard use without special care
- Modular with the Carinthia Tropen for deeper cold
- Roomy interior, even for broad-shouldered or large-chested sleepers
- Comes with a quality compression sack
- EU-manufactured throughout
Cons
- 1,850g (M) is genuinely heavy — roughly 2–3x heavier than a comparable down bag
- Too warm for use above ~5°C without sweating
- Small face opening requires an adjustment period and can feel restrictive
- Airtight construction makes packing fiddly without a deliberate technique
- Not PFC-free (though Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified)
- Not a bag to stuff carelessly; needs some care to pack efficiently
Who Should Buy This
The Defence 4 is the right bag for campers, hunters, military personnel, and serious cold-weather adventurers who are operating in wet, harsh environments and can absorb the weight penalty. If you’re doing hut-to-hut touring, snowmobile or 4x4-supported expeditions, car camping in deep winter, or bushcraft trips where you’ll be out for days in damp conditions, this bag earns its weight every time. It is not the right call for a gram-counting thru-hiker where pack weight is a primary constraint — for that use case, a high-quality down bag in a dry bag liner will serve better at half the weight.
Verdict
The Carinthia Defence 4 is as close to a “use it and forget it” cold-weather sleeping bag as exists on the market. The construction is thoughtfully engineered, the weatherproofing is exceptional for a sleeping bag, and the modular system adds real versatility. The 1,850g weight is the honest limitation — it’s a deliberate trade-off for military-grade resilience, and users who need that resilience will find it worthwhile. For anyone operating in wet, cold environments where insulation failure is not an option, this bag is a well-deserved benchmark. Rating: 7.5/10
