Summit Bum Classic

Overview

The Summit Bum Classic is a boxy, 2.5-liter zippered pouch from Oregon cottage maker Thrupack. It carries a phone, snacks, lip balm and a wallet at the hip, chest or shoulder. Thrupack’s founder designed it in 2016 as a “backpack sidekick” for hikers who found generic fanny packs lacking. It is light and well built, but it costs more than a stuff sack on a cord, and the standard fabric isn’t waterproof.

Performance

Weight and capacity. Pack-only weight is 71 g. With the standard strap it is 99 g. A Garage Grown Gear reviewer noted that the pack looks heavier than it is and that it adds only about 3–4 oz of base weight for 2.5 L of easy-access storage. The reviewer called the weight-to-size ratio “quite remarkable”. The box shape is the reason. Phone, snacks, a small wallet and a headlamp fit with room left over. Owners say it holds more than it looks like it can.

Organization. The layout is simple. A quick-access pocket on the outside of the main compartment is sized for most smartphones. Two internal pockets take a small wallet or similar items, and an internal clip keeps mittens or keys from sinking to the bottom. A reviewer at Primer Peak also used the gap behind the main compartment for flat items. There is no dedicated divider, so small items are best bagged. The loops on the top corners are meant for carabiners, and they let the pouch clip to a pack strap or hang from the belt.

Comfort and stability. Strap choice matters more than the pouch itself. Testers describe the optional 2” elastane Comfy Strap as plush and say it doesn’t dig into skin. The Garage Grown Gear reviewer said the pack stayed put with nothing bouncing around, and forgot it was on after the first stretch of trail. Primer Peak’s reviewer reported the Comfy Strap spread the load evenly and kept the pouch from sagging, even during weighted carries. Owners on Thrupack’s own site say the Comfy Strap makes a clear difference when the pack is worn over the shoulder or cross-body. The thin standard webbing strap saves 20 g and suits a lighter load. One buyer who ordered both preferred the standard strap. The bag fits any strap under 2” wide, so existing hip belts or shoulder straps can be reused.

Weather and durability. The zippers are water-resistant, but the pack is not waterproof, and a hard rain will find its way in. Thrupack sells waterproof Dyneema versions, which are lighter and cost more. Thrupack says the pack is designed to last a 3,000-mile hike. Owners praise the stitching and workmanship, and the YKK buckles and mil-spec webbing are the right class of hardware for that claim.

Customization and service. The pack is built through Thrupack’s online builder, which lets buyers choose fabric, strap and a stretch front pouch. One buyer found the standard size slightly small for their needs, and the owner made a larger one and rushed it in time for a trip. Reviews on the company site average 4.9 out of 5 across a dozen ratings. Owners also mention direct involvement from the owner when a delivery went wrong.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • 71 g bare, 99 g with the standard strap, for 2.5 L of usable space
  • Quick-access phone pocket and two internal pockets keep small items sorted
  • Strap-agnostic: accepts any strap under 2” wide and can be worn at the hip, chest or shoulder
  • Sturdy build with YKK buckles and a coated zipper; made in the USA
  • Customizable through the builder, with responsive owner service

Cons

  • Not waterproof in standard fabrics; Dyneema costs more
  • Comfy Strap is a separate purchase and adds 20 g over the standard strap
  • $59.99 and up is a lot for a pouch this size
  • No dedicated divider, so small items shuffle together

Who Should Buy This

Thru-hikers and section hikers who want phone, snacks and a navigation device within reach without stopping to open the pack will get the most from it. It also suits hikers who like to carry a pack and a chest pouch, or who want one pouch that works at the hip in camp and the chest on trail. Anyone on a tight budget, or who wants a fully waterproof pouch without paying for Dyneema, should look at a simple DIY pocket or a lighter stuff-sack option.

Verdict

The Summit Bum Classic is a lightweight, well-made hip pack that has earned its reputation among long-distance hikers. Add the Comfy Strap if the pack will see miles on the hip or over the shoulder. Buy it if easy-access storage matters to you and the price doesn’t. Skip it if you want waterproof storage.
