Reactive Lighting: The Main Event

This is the feature that either sells you on the REACTIK+ or leaves you cold. Reactive lighting works by automatically adjusting the type and brightness of the beam based on the surroundings — using a sensor to determine the proximity of nearby objects and the ambient light level. When you look downward to read a map or adjust your shoes, the light uses a softer flood mode; when you look straight ahead down the trail, the beam becomes a brighter spotlight. When hiking in a large group, your lamp will react to the light produced by the headlamps around you and will in turn extend your battery life.

In practice, the effect is genuinely useful. Reactive lighting adjustments make these headlamps stand apart from the competition — do not underestimate the joy of not having to stop and alter your brightness when you leave the view of street lights on a run, or enter a section of trail under thick tree cover. The standard reactive mode runs at around 170 lumens and casts a wider beam suited to technical terrain; the max power mode is 300 lumens, reaching 110 meters, but you’ll obviously be sacrificing battery life, so use it only if necessary on extended or overnight runs.

That said, the sensor has known edge cases. In a camping situation, things like campfire smoke will dim the light when you may want to actually cut through it, and the same complaints arise in rain, as the light reflects off water coming down. The reactive lighting mode also does not operate ideally in snowy, foggy, or cloudy conditions, because the reflected light confuses the sensor. Petzl makes it very clear that this light should NOT be worn while cycling — if riding at speed and a car or another cyclist with a light comes towards you, the other person’s light will be picked up by the sensor at a high level and could shut your light off completely, leaving you without a light and without any indication of your position.

One reviewer used it during an overnight 200-miler pacing effort totaling approximately 18 hours of darkness across two nights, managing two partial recharges — and between those two nights of use, never received a low battery notification, estimating closer to 7 hours per charge on the standard setting on a flat, open trail. After a 2-hour run switching between standard and max mode, one tester still had 66% battery life remaining. The key variable, as you’d expect, is how hard the reactive sensor is working. Open trail at constant pace? Runtime climbs. Technical terrain with constant brightness changes? It comes down faster. The 1800 mAh pack charges via micro USB — a port that was already feeling dated when this headlamp launched and is a clear weak point now. Some users found the rechargeable-only setup inconvenient in the field when the battery ran low at awkward moments, resorting to carrying a small power bank. The potential disadvantage of the built-in pack is that you’d need to bring a charged replacement for trips where you may run out of battery — alternatively, you can buy a battery converter that takes 3x AAAs.

Bluetooth and the MyPetzl Light App

The REACTIK+ allows the user to cycle between 8 light settings — 6 white and 2 red. The white light settings split into Reactive Lighting and Constant light groups, each with 3 options. The red light offers constant or strobe. All output adjustments are made within the MyPetzl Light app, which is easy to navigate.

The app allows you to control your profiles, choosing the 3 brightness levels for both a reactive and non-reactive setting — the top button on the lamp cycles through your 3 reactive levels while the side button cycles through standard levels.

Here’s the honest read on Bluetooth: the REACTIK+ is fully operational on its own without a phone — you still get three Reactive modes and three Constant modes, plus steady and blinking red LED modes. The app is convenient when you want to make a change in the car before heading out, but that almost never happens in practice, making it feel somewhat extravagant — one reviewer noted they’d have rather had $10–$20 shaved off the price. That’s fair. If you don’t bother downloading the app, you’ve essentially paid extra for a feature you’ll rarely use. But if you do use it, the ability to view remaining battery life and set up a customized personal lighting profile to optimize battery life for your activity is genuinely useful. One reviewer did have initial trouble pairing their phone to the light, found a workaround via a quick online search, and had no issues from that point on.

Fit and Build

The REACTIK+ uses a single strap that splits into two at the back of the head, adjustable via two buckles at the split point. The buckles are easy to adjust even while wearing the lamp, and result in little slippage during use. The battery sits in the front housing, but the strap design ensures the light doesn’t feel unbalanced.

If you’re a thru-hiker who mostly uses a headlamp around camp and for the occasional pre-dawn start, the Bluetooth and reactive complexity are probably overkill — a lighter, simpler light would serve you better. And given its discontinued status, the right buyer today is someone who finds a deeply discounted NOS unit and is comfortable without warranty support.

Verdict

The Petzl REACTIK+ was a genuinely innovative headlamp when it launched, and Reactive Lighting still holds up as a practical, trail-tested feature rather than a gimmick. The micro USB charging port and now-discontinued status are its biggest liabilities — if you find one at the right price, you’re getting a capable and durable light. But at full retail (if you can still find it there), the Petzl Swift RL or similar modern successors offer USB-C charging, higher lumen output, and active support for not much more money.
