Apple Watch Series 8

Overview

The Apple Watch Series 8 is a 32 g aluminum smartwatch that combines GPS, a skin temperature sensor, ECG, blood oxygen and crash detection in a case that looks almost identical to the Series 7. It suits day hikers and weekend walkers who already live in the iPhone ecosystem. For thru-hikers, the trade-off is blunt: it is a very good health tracker attached to a battery that wants a charger every night.

Performance

Battery. This is the Series 8’s defining limitation. Apple rates it at 18 hours, a figure based on a mix of time checks, notifications, app use and a 60-minute workout. Android Authority’s testers got a full 24 hours out of it, including a GPS workout and sleep tracking. Tom’s Guide found that switching on the new Low Power Mode for even a few hours pushed a unit well past 24 hours. Apple’s own ceiling for that mode is 36 hours. Charging is quick: roughly an hour from empty to full, and eight minutes on the charger before bed buys about eight hours of sleep tracking. That helps in town. On a trail it means a charger, a wall adapter or a battery bank is part of the kit, and the watch is not a set-and-forget device for a five-day section. For comparison, Apple’s Ultra, launched alongside it, is rated for up to 60 hours in low-power mode.

Sensors and safety. The Series 8 added a skin temperature sensor, which feeds sleep and cycle tracking, and Crash Detection, built on a high-g accelerometer that registers forces up to 256 g. Fall Detection and Emergency SOS are also on board, and international emergency calling works abroad. For solo hikers on road-adjacent trails, or anyone commuting to a trailhead by bike or car, that safety net is the most compelling reason to wear it. The watch is also rated to 50 meters for water resistance and IP6X for dust, so creek crossings, rain and a night in a dusty tent are not a concern. The 32 g case is light enough that GSMArena’s reviewer found the soft fluoroelastomer sport band comfortable for sleeping and workouts.

Navigation and tracking. The watch is a competent GPS tracker. It receives only the single-frequency L1 band, so under dense canopy or in deep canyons it has less to work with than newer dual-frequency watches. Owners who switched from dedicated outdoor watches have been less impressed. One MacRumors poster who bought a Series 8 to replace a Garmin Forerunner 255 reported that hiking and trail-run data was usually accurate but that the outdoor experience fell short of expectations, with some workout details not displaying properly (a thread where others pointed out the poster was running beta software). Apple’s watchOS also still limits step counts to daily totals, rather than logging them per hike, a gap that Tom’s Guide has criticized repeatedly. Newer watchOS hiking features, such as trail maps and tagged routes, are not tied to the latest hardware, so the Series 8 gets software upgrades even though its battery is fixed.

Display and daily use. The always-on screen is bright and legible in sunlight, and the S8 chip keeps menus snappy. The Series 8 is nearly indistinguishable from the Series 7 in design and battery specs, so owners of that model have little reason to upgrade. Those coming from an older watch will notice the larger screen and thinner bezels.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • 32 g case is comfortable for all-day and overnight wear
  • Crash Detection, Fall Detection and Emergency SOS add real safety value
  • Skin temperature, ECG and blood oxygen sensors are among the broadest in the category
  • Fast charging: about an hour to full, with a short top-up covering a night of sleep tracking
  • 50 m water resistance and IP6X dust rating handle rain and creek crossings
  • 32 GB of storage for music and podcasts without a phone

Cons

  • 18-hour rated battery, or 36 hours in Low Power Mode, is far short of multi-day needs
  • Charging adapter is not included in the box
  • Single-frequency L1 GPS is less robust in canyons and under heavy tree cover
  • Per-workout step counts are not logged
  • Works only with an iPhone
  • Aluminum case with Ion-X glass is less scratch-resistant than a sapphire watch

Who Should Buy This

The Series 8 is for iPhone owners who day hike, trail run or section hike with easy access to power, and who want a safety net and health tracking in one device. It also suits people who want a single watch for the office, the gym and weekend trips. Thru-hikers and anyone planning multi-day trips without reliable charging should look elsewhere: a Garmin or Coros watch lasts days or weeks on a charge, and Apple’s own Ultra offers roughly 60 hours in low-power mode. Android users cannot use it at all.

Verdict

The Apple Watch Series 8 is an excellent everyday smartwatch with genuinely useful crash and fall detection, and an adequate day-hike tracker. Its battery rules it out as a primary watch for ultralight backpacking, where a lighter, longer-lasting device does the same job for days longer. Buy it for town and day trips; leave it behind for the long trail.
