The iPhone 17 Pro is Apple’s compact flagship — a 6.3-inch, 206g phone built around the new A19 Pro chip, a bigger 4252 mAh battery, and a redesigned aluminum unibody. It’s not a “backpacking” product in the traditional sense, but for most of us it’s also the GPS unit, camera, InReach-adjacent satellite communicator, and trip-planning tool we’re already carrying. This review looks at it specifically through that lens: how it holds up as the phone in your hip belt pocket on a multi-day trip.

Performance
Battery life is the headline upgrade for trail use. Apple grew the battery from last year’s 3,582 mAh to 4,252 mAh on the eSIM-only version, and it shows. This year’s 17 Pro comes in at 3,998 mAh with a physical SIM slot or even 4,252 mAh on the eSIM-only variant, nearly 12% to 19% more than last year. In independent lab testing, the 17 Pro’s overall Active Use Score came in at a very respectable 15:23h — far ahead of both the Pixel 10 Pro and the Galaxy S25. One long-term reviewer summed it up simply: “I now only charge my phone every other day rather than every day.” On trail, that’s the difference between needing a battery bank every two nights versus every night — meaningful when you’re also running it in Airplane Mode most of the day to stretch things further.
Charging is also faster, which matters when you’re topping off from a solar panel or power bank at camp rather than a wall outlet. Fast charging delivers up to 50% charge in about 20 minutes with a 40-watt or higher adapter. That’s a real advantage over older iPhones if you’re trying to squeeze a quick top-up during a lunch break at a trailhead with cell service.
GPS and satellite functionality is present but thinly documented in third-party testing. The iPhone 17 Pro features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem, and includes support for dual-frequency GPS, NFC, Ultra-Wideband, and satellite connectivity for SOS and Find My functions. Dual-frequency GPS is the piece that actually matters in canyons or under tree cover — it’s the same tech that improves fix accuracy on dedicated GPS watches. I couldn’t find rigorous third-party accuracy benchmarks specific to backcountry conditions, so treat that as a spec-sheet claim rather than a tested one. The satellite SOS feature is a genuine safety net for dayhikers or thru-hikers who don’t want to carry a separate InReach, though it’s still emergency-only messaging, not the two-way casual texting a dedicated satellite communicator offers.
Screen visibility outdoors is one of the more underrated trail-relevant upgrades. Independent lab measurements found the display hit 1,012 nits when exposed to bright ambient light, with a peak brightness of a 15% white patch measuring 2,755 nits — genuinely bright enough to read maps and photos in direct alpine sun, something older iPhones struggled with.
Camera performance is the other standout for anyone using their phone as their only camera on trail. The 17 Pro now packs three 48MP cameras, including a 4x optical zoom capable of an 8x optical sensor crop, which also produces fantastic results. For documenting summit views or wildlife at a distance without packing a separate camera, that zoom range is a legitimate upgrade over previous Pro models.
Durability concerns are the biggest recurring complaint across reviews, and they matter for anyone tossing a phone into a hip belt pocket dozens of times a day. Reviewers flagged the finish as a weak point: the anodisation of the camera plateau is very weak, which is very worrying, and one reviewer said he couldn’t understand how a company like Apple would allow this to happen. If you’re not running a case, expect the camera bump and edges to show wear fast from rock scrambles, tent zippers, and trekking pole straps. Weight is a minor but real consideration: at 206g, this is up from 199.0g on the 16 Pro, adding a few grams to your base weight if you’re tracking that closely — negligible in the context of a full pack, but worth noting if you’re chasing every gram.

Who Should Buy This
This makes sense for hikers who already want a top-tier smartphone and are happy to let it double as their trail camera and navigation backup, rather than someone shopping specifically for backcountry gear. If your primary need is dedicated off-grid navigation and two-way satellite messaging, a Garmin inReach Mini or similar purpose-built device will still serve you better as your emergency comms — pair it with the iPhone rather than replace it.
Verdict
The iPhone 17 Pro’s battery and display upgrades genuinely help it pull double duty on trail better than previous models, and the camera is good enough that some hikers will leave the standalone camera at home. But it’s not a ruggedized outdoor device — the scratch-prone finish and unverified backcountry GPS performance mean it’s best thought of as a very capable everyday phone that happens to survive trail use well, not gear built for it. I’d put it at a 7.8/10 for backpacking use specifically — excellent as a multi-tool, but pair it with a case and, if you’re going remote, a dedicated satellite communicator.
