Performance
Polartec Alpha Direct is an unusual fabric to review because it breaks a lot of the rules we’re used to with fleece or synthetic insulation. Polartec Alpha Direct is a knit fabric composed of 100% polyester, with a base mesh grid and lofted synthetic fibers engineered to connect directly to that grid, and this open construction is central to its function. That open structure is exactly why the Nitro works so well during output and struggles the moment you slow down in any breeze.
On the move, it’s genuinely impressive. Coming in at only 110g for the women’s size 10, it’s one of the most lightweight mid layers you can buy, and it’s able to trap needed heat while on the move while simultaneously releasing excess heat to maintain a constant body temperature. One reviewer who wore it during a NZ Alpine Team-adjacent testing loop noted it’s perfect for days when the air temperature is starting to drop off, but by the afternoon, you’re heating up — which lines up with how most people use active-insulation pieces: as a layer you don’t have to keep taking off and putting back on.
The catch is wind. Because there’s nothing enclosing the insulation, it’s a good insulator in the right conditions when there’s no wind, but because there’s no face or backing fabric enclosing the insulation, it’s highly porous — stretch the fabric and you can see right through the gaps — and wind cuts straight through, stripping away any warmth. Durability is the one area where data is thin — this is a sparse, exposed-fiber fabric, and it looks fragile.
