TK2 Cool Trekking Socks

Overview

The TK2 Cool is Falke’s warm-weather take on its long-running TK2 trekking sock. It swaps the merino of the standard TK2 for a Lyocell-and-synthetic blend, in a mid-calf height with medium cushioning. It suits hikers who run hot and want a padded but breathable sock for summer trail days. The trade-off is that a synthetic-dominant blend gives up some of the odor resistance that merino offers on multi-day trips.

Performance

Cooling and moisture. The sock’s selling point is the Lyocell, a cellulose fiber that absorbs moisture and feels cool against skin. It sits in a three-layer build: a wicking layer next to the foot, and more absorbent material outside it, aimed at moving sweat off the skin and keeping blisters at bay. Falke positions it for easy terrain in warm conditions, and owners use it that way. Reviewers on European retail sites rate it 4.8 out of 5 across two dozen reviews, all of them recommending it. The most frequent praise is quick drying and good climate regulation, alongside comfort and a good fit.

Cushioning. Medium padding sits under the heel and ball of the foot, with thinner, more ventilated fabric over the top of the foot. That is enough protection for a day pack or a modest overnight load on maintained trail, without the thickness that makes a sock feel like a slipper in a trail runner. Heavily loaded winter-boot hikers or anyone who wants a plush, high-volume sock will find it on the thin side.

Fit. The sock is knit as a true left and right pair, with the toe box and sole shaped to each foot. Owners repeatedly list “fit well” among its virtues, and the construction explains why: less bunching and no stray fabric to rub. Flat seams at the toe and heel remove the usual hot spots.

Durability. “Robust” shows up as one of the most common positive tags in owner reviews, and the TK2 line in general has a reputation among trekkers for holding up wash after wash. The polypropylene and polyamide content do the heavy lifting here. The cellulose fiber needs gentler handling, so Falke says to skip the tumble dryer.

Odor. This is where a synthetic-heavy sock shows its limits. One owner who took them on a multi-week trip, including long alpine days, reported that the socks held on to foot odor. For weekend and section hikes with regular washing that matters little. On a thru-hike, where socks get rinsed in creeks and worn for days, merino alternatives, including Falke’s own merino TK2, will smell better late in a long stretch.

Weight. At 73 g a pair, it lands in the ordinary range for a mid-calf padded hiking sock. It is not a gram-saver. The case for it rests on comfort and temperature, not on the scale.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Lyocell blend runs cool and dries fast in warm weather
  • Anatomic left/right shaping and flat toe and heel seams limit rubbing
  • Medium cushioning protects heel and forefoot without bulk
  • Owners consistently describe it as durable
  • Mid-calf cuff works with both low trail shoes and boots

Cons

  • Synthetic-dominant blend can hold odor over multi-day, multi-week use
  • Not warm enough for cold-weather hiking
  • Do-not-tumble-dry care instruction is a nuisance
  • Cushioning is too modest for those who like a thick, plush sock

Who Should Buy This

Summer day hikers, section hikers and weekend backpackers who sweat through socks and want padding that doesn’t overheat. It works with trail runners or light boots on easy to moderate terrain. Thru-hikers who go days between washes, anyone hiking in cold conditions, and hikers who want maximum cushioning should look at merino or heavier-padded options instead.

Verdict

The TK2 Cool does one job well: keeping feet cool and dry in a properly shaped, durably built sock. It is a strong warm-weather choice and a weaker long-haul one, because the synthetic mix lets odor build up. Buy it for summer hiking; pick merino for anything colder or longer.
